Star Tribune commentary: Don't let environmental funding fall prey to political games
Note: Last updated May 2020.
A recent Star Tribune commentary calls on the Legislature to drop a controversial “poison pill” provision that is blocking the Environment & Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) bill this session.
The commentary was written by respected former members of the state's Legislative-Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) — the body charged with making recommendations for how environment trust fund money should be used each year.
The authors, each of whom served with distinction on the commission, speak to the importance of ensuring that fund money is used as voters intended rather than falling victim to a political controversy.
With $64 million in dedicated environmental funding hanging in the balance and just days left in the legislative session, time is running out.
